Delius’ “Norwegian Masterworks” is a mixed bag of fjord frolics and pastoral musings. The Aarhus troupe takes us on a scenic cruise, their strings singing like the sirens of the North Sea. Yet, at times, they seem to be more fascinated by the in-flight snacks than the aurora borealis outside their window.

The album is like a spritz of cheap cologne on a tuxedo-clad partygoer – it has its moments of charm, but ultimately, it fails to leave a lasting impression. It’s like watching an Ingmar Bergman film dubbed in English – you get the gist, but the subtleties are lost in translation. If Delius were a rock band, he’d be Coldplay – palatable, but you wouldn’t brag about being a fan. Actually, I am a fan. There, I said it.

Tom Fasano has been writing reviews of classical music recordings for the past quarter century. He's finally making them public on this blog.
