with Christian Zacharias (piano)Leipzig String Quartet
MDG · MDG3071610 · 1 hour 45 minutes
There’s something wonderfully generous about how Zacharias plays with the Leipzig Quartet here — he never treats the Piano Quintet as a vehicle for himself, but leans into the give-and-take that makes Schumann’s chamber writing so alive. The string quartets get just as much care, with that lovely balance of impulsiveness and structural clarity that Schumann always seems to be chasing. It’s the kind of set you can sink into for the full hour and forty-five minutes without ever feeling the length.
